WELL-meaning government officials have time and again proposed various measures aimed at addressing the country’s seemingly worsening air traffic problems.
One of the officials, Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe, now wants the government to allow private plane owners to have their own hangars and runways.
Batocabe aired the proposal after noting that concerned government authorities seem unable to perform their duties and responsibilities.
The party-list member of the House of Representatives was referring to officials of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP).
Batocabe also challenged the two government agencies to present clear programs designed to address the air traffic woes in this impoverished Southeast Asian nation.
Better still, said Batocabe, the government should not register private planes which do not have their own hangars and runways.
The messy practice of giving then taking back takeoff and landing slots to aircraft at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), the country’s premier international airport, is not helping the economy.
Anakbayan party-list Rep. Tom Villarin, on the other hand, attributed the air traffic congestion to the alleged lack of political will of concerned government officials.
For his part, Quezon City Rep. Winston “Winnie” Castelo proposed that private planes should instead operate at the Sangley Point in nearby Cavite to decongest NAIA.
Another QC congressman, Alfred Vargas, called for the construction of a super airport with at least four runways to address the air traffic congestion at NAIA.
In the view of many, the various proposals have the potential to solve the air traffic woes in the country.
Indeed, concerned government officials ought to have a vast reservoir of political will if we are to meet the needs of air travelers.
