WITH the Supreme Court (SC) decision upholding the constitutionality of President Duterte’s proclamation of martial law in Mindanao, critics should now refocus their attention on more productive endeavors.

Everybody agrees that it is the country and the Filipino people, now numbering more than 100 million, who get the short end of the continued “pagkawatak-watak dulot ng pagbabangayan ng mga lider natin.”

Thus, we commend PHILCONSA President Martin G. Romualdez and wife Rep. Yedda Marie Kittilstvedt-Romualdez for asking martial law critics to support Duterte’s strong resolve to end the Marawi crisis.

“With the SC ruling, let us stop dividing the nation… A call for unity is in order so that we can win the battle,” said Romualdez, a former leader of the influential independent bloc in the House of Representatives.

He added: “The Supreme Court has spoken and we should respect and rally behind this decision to quell terrorism. The High Tribunal is the final arbiter or interpreter of everything about the law.”

For her part, the articulate and highly-dependable lady lawmaker hailed the SC ruling, “hoping this would help boost the morale of government troops fighting (local and foreign) terrorists in Marawi City.”

Yedda Romualdez, a vice chair of the House committee on government enterprises and privatization, urged the people to stand united behind Duterte, who is doing his best to fight the terrorists.

Camarines Sur Rep. LRay Villafuerte, on the other hand, echoed the call of Martin Romualdez, a lawyer and banker by profession, adding “I hope that detractors would now stop bellyaching.”

Instead, critics ought to help Malacañang in relief and rehabilitation efforts in Marawi City, according to Villafuerte, a vice chairman of the powerful House committee on national defense.

In separate text messages, Reps. Raneo Abu, Winston Castelo, Robert Ace Barbers, Karlo Alexei Nograles, Sherwin Tugna, Gus Tambunting, Alfred Vargas, Aniceto Bertiz III and Rodolfo Albano III also lauded the SC ruling.

We urge critics and supporters of the Duterte administration to set aside their differences and work in unison for the sake of the nation and the suffering Filipino people.
