ENRIQUE Gil was on his way to the surprise birthday party for Liza Soberano at Regal Valencia last Tuesday night, but first, he had to attend his launch as Grip Wax endorser at B Hotel in Quezon City. A Grips executive said they got Enrique as “he is a very successful matinee idol with iconic hairstyles na ginagaya ng fans niya, so he’s an obvious choice for our product.”
“I’m really happy with Grips Hair Wax kasi, being under the public eye, I never go out without fixing my hair,” says Enrique. “Manipis kasi ang strands ng hair ko, so very limp, but with Grips, in just a few minutes it becomes more manageable and easier to style. Mabango pa and it has vitamins pa to nourish my hair to prevent hair fall. Tapos, it’s so easy to wash pa and very affordable.”
So what’s in store for him and Liza in 2017? “We’re finishing a new movie, ‘My Ex and Why’s’, under Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina. It’s our most mature, more realistic roles, totoong-totoo ang story kasi umpisa pa lang, nag-break na kami. And all our lines, galing talaga sa mga linya ng real life couples who broke up. It’ll be shown this February na. After that, we will have a new soap. Pero bago ‘yun, we will be guesting muna in another big show pero sa pilot week lang. So our fans have a lot to watch out for from us this year.”
Liza turned 19 last January 4 and his gift to her was a very expensive bag with a famous brand name. Does he always give lavish gifts to her? “No, ngayon lang. Kasi alam ko she wants to have that bag, but she’s a breadwinner, so her priority is her family kaya tinitipid niya ang sarili niya. I felt na she’s deserving naman of that kind of bag, so I ordered it for her from Italy. But for other friends, I usually give normal stuff lang, not that expensive.”
So, they’re officially on now? “No, close friends pa rin lang kami. Kasi 19 siya, 24 na ako, I don’t want to rush things din naman. Alam ko, may iba pa siyang priorities, e. At hindi naman importante ‘yung label. Pero kung kami na talaga, I will announce it myself sa buong mundo. Ako pa ba? I’ll be proud to announce it myself. Dapat nga, magkasama kami sa Japan with her family noong New Year. May ticket na ako. Kaya lang, hindi na-release ‘yung visa ko, e nag-holiday na ang Japanese Embassy so hindi na-release. Sayang nga, e.”
IZA STARTS YEAR RIGHT
IZA Calzado says 2017 started really well for her. She has a new movie, “Ilawod”, to be shown starting January 18, and she has a new primetime soap that started airing last January 9, “A Love to Last”. “It’s the best way to start the year right,” she says. “Very productive kasi busy ako with work.”
She has played a lot of challenging roles before but she finds her role in the horror flick “Ilawod” (which means the downstream current of a river) as one of the most demanding so far. “I play Kathy, the wife of Ian Veneracion as Dennis and mother of our two children, Harvey Bautista as Ben and Xyriel Manabat as Bea,” she says. “We live a peaceful life until one day, si Ian, who’s a reporter, came home from the mountains after covering an event involving exorcism, without knowing na naisama pala niyang umuwi sa bahay namin ‘yung water element or nymph called Ilawod. Unti-unting magugulo ang family namin kasi gusto ng Ilawod na siya ang mag-dominate sa aming family to manipulate all of us.
As the mother, siyempre, very protective ako and I will do everything para ipagtanggol ang mga anak ko. Naiibang horror movie ang ‘Ilawod’ so those who love scary movies will really enjoy watching this. Magaling kasi ang director naming si Dan Villegas in cooking up eerie and spooky scenes. I’ve done horror films before pero iba itong ‘Ilawod’ in that it will really give the viewers the most frightening time of their lives.”
Direk Dan Villegas himself praises Iza. “Napakagaling din namang aktres ni Iza, lalo na in conveying horror. Her eyes are so very expressive at very convincing lalo na sa mga eksena ng katatakutan. Sa bagay, lahat silang mga artista ko rito sa ‘Ilawod’, puro magagaling talaga and they made my job as a director much easier.”
In “A Love to Last,” Iza also plays Ian V’s wife. “Pero hiwalay na kami rito sa soap,” says Iza. “Magkakaroon siya ng bagong love interest, si Bea Alonzo, but then babalik ako as the wife to mess up their lives.”
JILLIAN NOT WORRIED ABOUT ‘AWKWARD STAGE’
JILLIAN Ward was a super cute 4-year old girl when she was discovered in the Little Miss Philippines contest of “Eat Bulaga” in 2009. GMA7 got her as a child actress and she appeared in several soaps like “The Last Prince”, “Ilumina”, “Jillian: Namamasko Po”, “Daldalita”, “Captain Barbell”, “Biritera”, “Andres de Saya” and many more. She’s just turning 12 this February 23 but she’s what you call “malaking bulas”, so she already looks like a teenager. As one writer comments: “Dalaga na o!” These little girls really grow up so fast!
Isn’t she afraid that as a tween, she’d now be in what they call the awkward stage and she might have no more assignments coming up? “Hindi naman po,” says Jillian. “Kasi heto nga, ang ganda-ganda ng role ko as Katherine in ‘Sa Piling ni Nanay’. Ako ‘yung anak na pinag-aagawan nina Ate Yasmien Kurdi and Ate Katrina Halili. I’m really happy to be a part of this show kasi very successful siya at more than six months na kami sa ere.”
Jillian’s edge is that she’s also a good singer, so we won’t be surprised if GMA Records would also get her and sign her up to a recording contract. Meantime, as Katherine in “Sa Piling ni Nanay”, she has already discovered the truth that Yasmien as Ysabel is her real biological mother and not Katrina as Scarlet, but Katrina will not give her up that easily and will do everything in her power to get Jillian back. She even resorts to violence with the help of new cohorts like Antonio Aquitania as Rod, Banjo Romero as Budong and Diva Montelaba as Rose to take away Jillian from Yasmien.
