National Bureau of Investigation Director Nestor Mantaring yesterday advised Sen. Panfilo Lacson to surrender and face the charges lodged against him.“We have a two-way process in our justice system. The senator will be afforded with the same rights of any accused facing a criminal case,” Mantaring said. He gave assurances that Lacson will be given the opportunity to clear his name once he turned himself in. “If he is indeed innocent of the charges, he can clear his name by submitting himself to authorities and defend himself,” the NBI chief said. The NBI earlier said it knows where Lacson is hiding and that the International Police will help in his arrest. However, Lacson’s lawyer, Alex Avisado said his client is not hiding and the government knows he’s in Hong Kong. Avisado said they will ask a Manila court to reconsider its decision to issue a warrant of arrest against the senator. “The lawyers have the duty to protect their client and it is up to them on how they go over to their defense and it is their right to exhaust legal remedies,” Avisado said. Mantaring said the NBI has already contacted its counterpart in Hong Kong to give the bureau any information regarding Lacson’s whereabouts. He said Lacson will be placed in the Red Notice anytime and such report will be disseminated to all countries where the Interpol is located. “The Interpol has 186 member-countries and the intelligence network of the 186 countries will help follow the trail of the senator. Apart from this, we have also started coordinating with our foreign counterparts to help us. We also coordinate with the police attaches of the countries which are not members of the Interpol,” he said. |
