A DAY before the election campaign officially starts, eight presidential aspirants faced each other in a debate sponsored by the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Only deposed president Joseph Estrada refused to show  up, citing the “bias” of the newspaper against him.

His spokesperson, Margaux Salcedo, said the former president did not join because he has no good experience with the PDI, especially during his presidency.

“The executive committee of the campaign felt that Inquirer is always biased against Erap, that it would work more harm than good to attend, and advised President Erap not to go,” Salcedo said.

Outside the UP Main Theater, followers of different candidates rallied to show their support. Present were Gilbert Teodoro of Lakas-Kampi-CMD, Sen. Noynoy  Aquino of the Liberal Party, Sen. Manny Villar, Nacionalista Party; Sen. Richard Gordon of Bagongbayan; Sen. Jamby Madrigal; Nick Perla; JC delos Reyes and evangelist Bro. Eddie Villanueva.

Supporters of Teodoro were in green, Aquino’s  were in yellow while Villar’s were clad in orange. After the debate, they shouted  their own cheers to get the attention of the people.
