UNIVERSITY of the East swept the women’s and men’s fencing titles while ending Far Eastern University’s four-year reign in men’s athletics in the UAAP sportsfest over the weekend.

The Lady Tamaraws extended their domination in women’s athletics to seven years, the longest current active streak in all sports in the league, last Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Track and Field Stadium.

Despite losing two-time MVP Michelle Bruzola to graduation, UE has still enough ammunition to complete a ‘three-peat’ in the women’s fencing after scooping five gold, three silver and one bronze medals at the end of the three-day competition at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Leading the onslaught for the Rolando Canlas-mentored Lady Warriors is Jamie Nicanor, who was named  MVP after ruling the women’s individual foil, women’s team foil and women’s epee events.

UE beat 2006-07 champion Ateneo, which avoided a gold medal shutout after Stephanie Payoyo defeat Cristine Almas in the women’s individual epee final, and FEU.

The Red Warriors regained the tile after carting away four gold and four bronze medals, with Nathaniel Fritz Gutierrez taking home the MVP honors after his gold medal finishes in the men’s individual foil and men’s team foil.

UE, the league’s winningest men’s fencing team with six titles, trounced University of the Philippines and deposed two-time champion University of Santo Tomas for the title.

The Recto-based fencers also swept the Rookie of the Year plums courtesy of Jylyn Nicanor (women’s) and Manoah Baal (men’s).
