SOME candidates used the presidential debate sponsored by The Inquirer yesterday to gang up on Sen. Manny Villar on his huge advertising spending which purportedly betrays his pro-poor image. Sen. Jamby Madrigal said she has regretted getting the services of multi-awarded actress Judy Ann Santos in the 2004 senatorial elections. “The use of actors, you had to pay P30 million to endorse you is an insult to the Filipino intelligence,” said Madrigal, a staunch critic of Villar, during the presidential debate held at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. “I have seen the folly of my ways and I will not repeat that because I don’t believe that we should perpetuate lies (using) a thick budget.” Madrigal’s tirade came after the latest Pulse Asia one-on-one survey late last month showing Villar overtaking Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III by one percent through 46% against 45% ratings. Madrigal also lambasted the famous “Dagat ng Basura” infomercial of Villar showing children from the slums.. In his defense, Villar said critics should not make it difficult for them to believe that a shrimp vendor like him from Tondo could get rich and help the poor without getting involved in corruption, adding that he has been a businessman for a very long time before entering politics. Villar said it is his campaign strategy to have better access to advertisements because he is not a son of a former President and does not have a famous sister in showbiz. “Bakit naman ho napakahirap na sabihin or isipin na ang isang mahirap ay p’wedeng yumaman sa malinis na paraan?” asked Villar. “I have stopped being a businessman a long time ago. I was the industry leader. We became an industry leader, homebuilder before I entered politics,” said Villar. Nevertheless, Madrigal said she has one good thing to say about Villar that drew attention from the crowd. “Maganda ang pagka-tina ng buhok niya.” JC delos Reyes of the Ang Kapatiran said he would not subscribe to what Villar has been doing in his alleged “empty” advertisements given the chance to have huge funds. Erap snubs debate For fear that he will not get a fair treatment, ousted President Joseph Estrada yesterday snubbed the presidential debate. John Nery, an Inquirer columnist, announced before the start of the presidential debate the non-appearance of Estrada. “Unfortunately, former President Estrada was not able to make it today. We regret his decision but we wish him good luck,” said Nery. But Margaux Salcedo, spokesman of deposed President Estrada, told the Inquirer that Estrada refused to attend the debate as advised by his advisers due to the newspaper’s purported bias against the former Chief Executive. “The executive committee of the campaign felt that the Inquirer is always biased against Erap, that it would work more harm than good to attend, and advised President Erap not to go,” said Salcedo. |
