AN abandoned bag caused tension among devotees to the Black Nazarene yesterday, after it was left in front of the Sta. Cruz Church on Ronquillo Street in Sta. Cruz, Manila, and stirred suspicions that it contained a bomb.

The said bag was found at around 9 a.m. by a concerned citizen on Ronquillo Street and then reported the matter to the Explosive and Ordnance Division (EOD) of the Manila Police District (MPD).
While authorities were checking the bag for possible explosive device, the area was cordoned off but kibitzers continued milling around the area.
An X-ray was conducted on the bag which was found to contain personal items, among them a T-shirt with the words ‘Poong Nazareno’ printed on it. The bag reportedly belonged to a devotee from Samar who had to use the restroom.
The procession began from the Quirino Grandstand at 5:30 a.m. following a Mass attended by millions.
