A 34-year-old man was arrested on the complaint of the parents of a 12-year-old girl whom he allegedly tried to elope with after they established a romantic relationship via social media.
Now in the custody of the Manila Police District-District Police Intelligence Operation Unit is Nathaniel Moncada Espia. He was nabbed at Pier 4, North Harbor, Tondo, as he arrived from Talisay, Cebu.
The girl, a Grade 7 student residing in Singalong, Manila, told probers that last January 26, he met the suspect on Facebook after acknowledging his friend request until the suspect began courting her, even sending her cellphone load so they could make video calls.
The girl said she later agreed to be his girlfriend and accepted an offer to go to Cebu so he can send her to school and take care of her needs.
The suspect sent money for her fare and went to Pier 4 but the guard on duty looked for a clearance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) since she was a minor and travelling alone.
The girl thus went home and it was then that her parents learned about her relationship with the suspect.
When efforts by the father to break up the relationship did not succeed, they girl’s parents decided to seek help from the police. Charges are now being readied against the suspect.
