SEVERAL importers and brokers at the Bureau of Customs (BoC) urged Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson to
scrutinize the credibility of one of the possible witnesses in the Senate hearing investigating the tara
system in the agency.
One of the resource persons that Lacson is set to present is Atty. Arnel Alcaraz, former Customs
Deputy Commissioner for Enforcement Group, who was sacked due to alleged extortion.
The importers and brokers expressed fear that the Senate investigation would be doubted if the
credibility of the witness is questionable.
Reports said it was President Rodrigo Duterte who sacked Alcaraz last November 2016 following
involvement on alleged extortion activities.
Alcaraz was slapped with extortion complaint before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)
by some businessmen who urged the President to act against the official.
