THE Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency yesterday cited the major role played by the Philippine National Police spearheaded by the PNP Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force in the government’s successful anti-drug accomplishments in 2014.
PDEA chair Undersecretary Arturo G. Cacdac Jr. said they have collaborated with the PNP and other law enforcement units in conducting a total of 16,931 anti-drug operations, 280 of them considered “high-impact operations: from January to December 2014.
He said the number was 48 percent higher than the operations they conducted in 2013. The number of persons arrested last year also rose by 50 percent from 9,162 in 2013 to 13,779 in 2014.
Cacdac said 1,399 of those arrested last year are high-value targets composed of 63 foreign nationals, 190 government officials/employees and law enforcers, 58 leaders/members of drug group, 18 leaders/members of armed group, 150 target-listed suspects, 47 wanted-listed suspects, three prominent personalities, 550 drug suspects arrested from high-impact operations and other HVTs numbering to 320.
Cacdac, a member of Philippine Military Academy Class 1978, said the amount of illegal drugs, controlled precursors and essential chemicals confiscated last year amounted to P6.3 billion -- a 16.7 percent increase compared last year. Among the evidence seized last year were 718 kilograms of shabu worth P4.9 billion.
The consolidated figures were results of successful anti-drug operations highlighted by high volume seizures made by combined operatives of PDEA and the PNP during a search in two storage facilities in San Fernando City in Pampanga where P2.38 billion worth of shabu were confiscated on September 12; the combined operation of the PDEA and PNP the Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operations Task Force headed by Senior Superintendent Bartolome C. Tobias in Parañaque City that led to the confiscation of P397.244 million worth of ephedrine, a primary component in the manufacture of shabu, on January 24 last year and the series of anti-drug operations by PDEA and local police in Davao City on March 2014 which resulted in the seizure of 68.95 kilos of cocaine bricks valued at P363.24 million.
Some 110 drug dens were also dismantled in 2014 compared to the 83 illegal facilities closed down the previous year and 506 marijuana plantation sites in 2014 were destroyed worth P397 million, an increase of 12 percent in 2013.
