SENATOR Miriam Defensor-Santiago revealed in yesterday’s hearing that a “very rich man” known to the public is financing a coup plot against President Benigno Aquino III.    Santiago refused to name the alleged coup financier. “He is one known to have funded similar coup d’etat in the past.  That’s why you know him,” she added after attending the hearing.
When asked if she can name the person she is referring to, Santiago answered: “No, because he’ll make a cry about it, although I’m immune from libel since we’re discussing Senate matters within the Senate hall itself. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it until after the Department of National Defense is already finished with their investigation or their clarification.”
Defense Sec. Voltaire Gazmin confirmed reports of a coup plot against the Chief Executive amid the outrage on the Mamasapano incident. He, however, assured that there is no brewing coup among the military and it will not support one.
Santiago said that no matter how much she criticizes the President, she is strongly against a military takeover, which “since as of last report was the subject of a summit meeting with groups who want to eliminate the President to make way for somebody else.”
The senator said the group has not reached a consensus among themselves (while) its members are still meeting together with the financier, “the most prominent financier who is the richest man of all.”
Meanwhile, Malacañang has downplayed the coup rumors.
Presidential Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma Jr. said the Armed Forces of the Philippines is well prepared to douse and abort any plot to oust Aquino.
