BRIGHT days ahead for University of the Philippines in the UAAP.
UP coach Bo Perasol yesterday confirmed the transfer of Bright Akhuetie to boost the once-moribund Fighting Maroons’ men’s basketball program.
“Yes, that’s definitely good news,” said Perasol, taking pride on Akhuetie’s move from NCAA team University of Perpetual Help System Dalta to UP.
Perasol also confirmed that the Diliman-based school was able to secure Akhuetie’s release from his former school in Las Pinas.
The 6-foot-7 Akhuetie will provide a much-needed paint presence for the Maroons, who finished fifth last year with a 5-9 record.
Akhuetie averaged 17.6 points, 12.1 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, and 1.3 assists in his last season for the Altas.
He was named in the Mythical Team last year while leading Perpetual Help in the Final Four, losing to eventual champion San Beda.
The Nigerian center, however, will still have to sit out one season for residency and will play for UP in Season 81.
Akhutie will face a stiff challenge in Cameroonian Ben Mbala, who powered La Salle to the UAAP crown last December.
