THE country’s top basketball players 18 years old and below will converge in Cebu City for the staging of the 2017 Dreamers Regional Basketball Challenge on May 23-27 at the Sacred Heart School Ateneo de Cebu Old Campus along Mango Ave.

Twenty-two teams divided into  three age categories are seeing action in the prestigious five-day competition organized by  the Pinoy Youth Dreamers, headed by coach  Beaujing Acot, and sanctioned by the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP).

The first day of competition will begin on Tuesday, May 23.

SBP deputy executive director Bernie Atienza will  deliver the inspirational remarks during the opening ceremony at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23.

Atienza will be assisted by SBP Region 7  Director Rico Navarro  and Acot.

“Everything is ready. Cebu, thru SBP Region 7, is ready to roll the red carpet to participants from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao,” said Acot, who is organizing the tournament as  part of the PYD’s grassroot development program.

“With the Dreamers Regional Basketball Challenge, we hope to discover more young and outstanding players from all over the country and give them the opportunity to play basketball and shine.”

The championship games and closing ceremony will be held  on Saturday, May 27.

This is the second time that PYD is organizing a regional event, according to Acot.

Last month, PYD hosted a week-long competition hosted by PYD Lucban chairman Chicoy Capistrano.

It’s now the turn of PYD Cebu under chairman Regan King ( RDAK).

Acot lauded the PYD Cebu for hosting  the competition, adding  “competitions like  the Dreamers Challenge encourage the youth to embrace sports  and make it a way of life. The discipline in basketball also builds character and confidence that will help us  deal with daily challenges.”

Acot will serve as the tournament director, while Rommel Rasmo is the deputy tournament director.

PYD commissioner for VIsayas and Mindanao  is  coach Jerry Abuyanor.

Supporting the event are Smart Communication Incorporated, 7-Eleven Philippines, PP Busline, Dymaxion Builders Incorporated, Leyte Biliran Star Bus Corporation, Regent, Starbread, Breadstory, JAMAN, Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, H+Autoworx, Xpress Printing, Jonie’s Sizzlers & Roast, Dunkin’ Donuts, Chairman Joselito Dela Merced and Josie Macapagal of Barangay San Antonio, Pasig City and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office.
