Paete in big start in Agarao Cup

PAETE,  Laguna -- Host Paete brought down  Mabitac, 100-84, to lead opening-day winners in the first Cong. Benjie C. Agarao-4th District Inter-Town 22 years old and under men’s basketball championship at the Agarao gym here last Jan.  3.

John Paulo Tam exploded with 38 points to power Paete of coach Luis Cadang to a rousing debut in this prestigious 10-team tournament held in  honor of Cong. Agarao

Justine  Eruel Barba and Arleo Vertudez carried the fight for Mabitac  with 17 and 12 points, respectively.
Halftime score was 44-31 for Paete.
Sharing the limelight were Lumban, which outlasted Kalayaan, 102-96; Cavinti, which trounced Luisiana, 97-75; and Sta.Cruz, which bested Pagsanjan,  86-80.
Angelo Liwanag  scattered 25 points to lead a balanced scoring attack by Lumban, which is playing under coach Alfredo Mendoza.
Backing up Liwanag were  Yasona with 20 points, Harley Derek Estrella with 15, Reden Mestidio with 11 and Kent Jeremy De Leon with 9.
Ferdinand Dagsindal Jr. paced Kalayaan with 32 points, Kate Kastene Yapana with 20, Mark John Lucky Ablao with 17, John Rogene Lacao-cao  with 12 and Mar Nielsen Torres with 10
Cavinti rode on Steven Castillo’s 35 points to beat Luisiana.
Also scoring for the Joseph P. Baltazar-mentored Cavinti were Ren Aljhon Lubugin (18), Derick Atencio (14), Mark Glenn Delgado (7) and Leo Paulo Rocamora(6).
Luisiana got 21 points from Domingo.
In the fourth game,  Sta. Cruz relied on Rey Jann Sandoval (13), John Zernan Hernandez (11), Arlan Santos (11), Oliver Palad (10) and Ronald Elca (9).to beat Pagsanjan.
Sta. Cruz, handled by coach  Robert C. Abetria, led 35-30 at halftime.
John Anthony Amores (16), Teddy John Reazo (14), Rodney Roi Malto (13), Jay-V  Absena (10) and Howard Carey Ramos (8) led the way for Pagsanjan.
The tournament is being organized by Benko  Agarao, Board Member  of the 4th District of Laguna and  Mayor Mutok Bagabaldo  of host Paete.
Tournament director is coach Johny Tam with  Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) Region 4 A & B director Leonardo “Ding” Andres Sr. as commissioner and Jomar  Cadapanpan  as  technical head.
