PARAÑAQUE outlasted Taguig, 73-67, and Makati subdued Metro Manila Development Authority, 88-76, in a pair of crucial South Division matches in the 2017 Metro Basketball Tournament (MBT) seniors competition at the Hagonoy gym in Taguig.
Five players, led by John Lawrence Uduba and Pruvil Bermudes, scored in double figures in the Green Berets’ third win in five matches in this 14-team tournament presented by Metro Manila Sports Fest and sponsored by San Miguel Corp., World Balance and Higer Bus.
Uduba scored 13 points on perfect five-of-five shooting and Bermudes added 11 points, including three triples for the Green Berets, who outscored the Generals, 23-11, in the second quarter to take control of the game.
Mavrick Dwight Saguiguit, Lordy Joshua Geronimo and Chris Lalata added 10 points apiece for Parañaque, which climbed into solo third place behind only unbeaten Las Piñas (4-0) and Mandaluyong (4-0).
Noel Santos and Miguel Ramos carried the Generals’ losing cause with 22 and 15 points, respectively.
With its sixth straight setback, Taguig finished as the only winless team in the tournament, which also has “Mobile App ng Bayan” Barangay 143 as co-presentor, Synergy 88 as main sponsor and Spalding as official ball.
Makati also drew big numbers from Nino Romano (24 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists), John Louis Vicente (11 points), Dhtisten John Domingo (11 points) and James Louis Camacho (10 points, 13 rebounds) to beat MMDA and finish with a 2-4 win-loss record.
Camacho and Domingo hit back-to-back triples as the Skyscrapers went on a 10-1 run against the Black Wolves in the final 2:11 to win pulling away.
Steven Art Andres fired 22 points and Dan Natividad added a triple double of 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for MMDA, which dropped to 2-3.
MBT commissioner Pido Jarencio said the No. 1 team in both North and South divisions after a single-round robin affair will advance outright to the semifinals of this tournament also supported by Excellent Noodles, Nature’s Spring Water, 1-Pacman Partylist, Hopewell Sales Corp., Gatorade, Star Bread, Frabelle Foods, Regan Industrial Sales, Inc., Glitter.ph, Alcoplus, Primadonna and Archie’s Bespoke Bar + Grill.
The No. 2 teams will have twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
