DAVAO CITY-- The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC)-backed Kadayawan Girls Volleyball opened at the University of Mindanao (UM) gym in Matina here yesterday with some 150 under-13 players from 10 teams urged by top PSC officials to study hard and  pursue their dreams.

Kung dili ta mag-eskwela dili mabuak ang kapobre  (This tournament is just for fun but all  our popular national athletes did not win the gold, silver or bronze automatically. They also began with fun games like this. What’s really important is for you to study hard and study well).”

Education, according to him, is the only way to alleviate anybody from poverty.

Thus, he  encouraged the  girl players from different public elementary schools in the city to be serious in their studies as well as in their sport.

official og  mag libot-libot sa laing lugar  (I’m from the province, you

are  all better than me  because you are from the city. I also studied just like you, I learned  in school...

who would ever think I would become a government official and be able to go around the world),” the PSC chief who grew up in Padada, Davao del Sur said during his keynote speech.

Commissioner Maxey, meanwhile, inspired the girls to dream and play for the country.

Pursue inyong sport, inyong dreams. Pasalamat mi sa inyong parents kay ginasuportahan mo sa inyong pagdula (We sent off the national athletes who will compete in the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In sports, however, there is victory and defeat. I encourage you to aspire to be in the national team someday. Pursue your sport, your dreams. We  thank your parents for supporting you),” Maxey said.
