19th, 20th PNP COVID-19 deaths recorded

TWO more policemen have succumbed to COVID-19 related illness bringing to 20 the number of Philippine National Police officers and men who have died since last March 16 after contracting the dreaded virus, the Journal Group learned yesterday.

The 20th fatality was identified as a 50-year-old Police Non-Commissioned Officer from the National Capital Region Police Office who passed away last Wednesday while the 19th is a 51-year-old PNCO from the Police Security and Protection Group who died last August 15 but his death was only reported this week.

The 18th was a 54-year old Police Commissioned Officer from a Regional Maritime Unit who died last October 5.

On Thursday, the PNP Health Service registered 26 new cases composed of 8 from the NCRPO; 5 each from the Police Regional Office 3 in Central Luzon and PRO4-A in Calabarzon region; 2 each from a National Operations Support Unit and a National Administrative Support Unit; and 1 each from the PNP National Headquarters, PRO2 in Cagayan Valley; PRO6 in Western Visayas and PRO8 in Eastern Visayas.

PNP-HS director, Brigadier General Ronaldo E. Olay a total of 6,296 policemen have contracted the disease since last March although 5,367 of them have fully recovered and are now back on duty.

Olay said they are also monitoring 909 “active cases” in the 209,000-strong police force.

Last September 18, the PNP-HS reported the 17th COVID-19 fatality in the police organization: a 28-year old Non-Commissioned Officer from the NCRPO who succumbed to medical co-morbidities and complications aggravated by the virus.
