2 boys, man hurt in Ecija kwitis blasts

SAN JOSE CITY –A 10-year-old boy and a man were injured in firecracker blasts that occurred at the height of New Year’s Eve revelry here on Thursday.

City police head Lt. Col. Criselda De Guzman said 10-year-old victim John Michael Coprade, Grade 3 pupil, of Pabalan Subd., Bgy. Abar 1st ignited a baby rocket (kwitis) but it flew upwards, hitting a tree, and then bounced downwards towards the boy’s direction, accidentally exploding on his right leg.

The boy sustained blast injuries and was rushed to the Ospital ng Lungsod ng San Jose for emergency treatment.

The incident occurred at 12:10 a.m. Friday.

De Guzman identified the victim in another firecracker-related injury as JayAr Anastacio, 28, of Bgy. Villa Marina.

Anastacio sustained first-degree burns on his right hand after igniting a kwitis which suddenly exploded at 8:19 p.m.

In Bongabon, police said eight-year-old boy Mark Clain James Lopez, of Bgy. Palomaria, was hurt and taken to the Bongabon District Hospital, after an unexploded baby rocket which he picked and put inside a bottle suddenly exploded after lighting it up.

In Cabanatuan City, police led by Lt. Col. Barnard Danie Dasugo conducting a random inspection of stalls selling prohibited firecrackers and pyrotechnics accidentally found an abandoned box containing assorted firecrackers along Rizal Street, which was not part of the designated areas for selling.

Recovered by the police were 730 pieces of kuwitis, 28 pieces of big fountain, 39 fountain-small, 300 pieces of roman candle, 84 pieces small box luces, 460 luces five colors, 280 Victory light luces, 810 pieces luces special, one trumpillo, 320 pieces baby rcket, 206 pieces Happy Flower Fire Crakers, 10 pieces assault fire crackers and 114 pieces snapper.
