2 NPA rebels, founder of UGMO in Ilocos Sur, yield

CAMP PRESIDENT QUIRINO, Ilocos Sur — Police reported yesterday that two members of the Underground Mass Organization (UGMO) surrendered to the government yesterday afternoon in Bgy.Poblacion,Quirino, Ilocos Sur.

In his report to Police General Camilo Pancratius P. Cascolan, chief, PNP, PRO1 Regional Director Police Brigadier General Rodolfo S. Azurin, Jr. identified the surrenderees as Romeo Valdez Mangay-ayam a.k.a. “Bawang”, 62, and Benigno Ig-an Diyan Sr., 64, both residents of Bgy. Patungcaleo, Quirino, Ilocos Sur.

Azurin also confirmed that the two surrendered NPA supporters were recruiters/founders/officers of the Save Quirino Movement Underground Mass Organization under the umbrella of Cordillera People’s Alliance.

The surrender was facilitated by joint elements of the Regional Intelligence Unit (lead unit), Regional Intelligence Division, Provincial Intelligence Unit, FSNOL 3012nd AISS PAF, 702ND IB PA, 73RD MICO 7MIB 7ID PA, 81ST IB, 69TH IB PA, 102ND and 103RD Maneuver Company, RMFB1 and Quirino MPS.

Police Brigadier General Azurin extended his appreciation to Mayor Allen L. Nimo, MSWDO Lilia Luisa G Sevilla and MLGOO Arvin C Daus, all in Quirino, Ilocos Sur, who became instrumental in the surrender of these NPA supporters.

The surrender of these NPA supporters implies they are no longer happy with the ideologies of the Communist National Terrorists in waging violence and fear to the community,” said Azurin.

He also stressed the importance of the Whole-of-Nation Approach in Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict that impacts the peace and development of the country.

Azurin further extended his gratitude to the LGUs for their continued support in the counterinsurgency efforts of PRO1.

Meanwhile, it can be recalled that seven militiamen also surrendered to the government side last August 2020 following the armed encounter that transpired in Sta Cruz, Ilocos Sur last August 8, 2020.

The surrenderees are now under the custody of the Regional Intelligence Unit 1 for custodial debriefing and proper documentation.
