The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) announces a series of inspirational and insightful lectures by the 2024 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees on November 13-14, 2024. Presented by the Ramon Magsaysay Transformative Leadership Institute (RMTLI), this year’s Magsaysay Awardees will share their experiences and insights on pressing global challenges, fostering dialogue on peace, healthcare, cultural preservation, social entrepreneurship, and environmental conservation.
Averaging 70,000 participants across in-person, online, and on-demand platforms, the RMTLI Lecture Series has consistently drawn a large and engaged audience. To accommodate diverse schedules and maximize accessibility, the 2024 lectures will be livestreamed, with sessions available via Zoom and cross posted on the Foundation’s YouTube and Facebook pages. Whether attending onsite or remotely, participants can expect a seamless experience as they engage with the profound insights of this year’s Awardees.
LECTURES SLATED FOR NOVEMBER 13, 2024
Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong,from Vietnam, will present her lecture “Remembering the Vietnam War: Tragedies, Lessons, and the Unconventional Agents for Peace.” As an obstetrician and dedicated researcher, Dr. Phuong has spent years uncovering the connection between birth defects and the victims of Agent Orange. Drawing from her tireless advocacy for victims of Agent Orange, Dr. Phuong will explore the long-lasting effects of the Vietnam War 50 years on, highlighting her purpose-driven work and the ongoing quest for peace that transcends justice.
The focus shifts to the pioneering efforts of the Rural Doctors Movement in Thailand, which has been driving healthcare innovation for over 50 years. The lecture, “The Path to Inclusive Healthcare: Following the Footsteps of Thailand’s Rural Doctors Movement,” will explore how Thailand’s Rural Doctors Movement (RDM) emerged in response to the 1973 mandate for medical graduates to serve in rural areas. Faced with challenges in remote locations, doctors formed networks like the Rural Doctor Society and the Rural Doctor Foundation to share knowledge and improve public health services. Their lecture will showcase how the RDM’s unique structure and its commitment to improving public health services have made it a model for sustainable healthcare systems.
LECTURES SLATED FOR NOVEMBER 14, 2024
Karma Phuntsho, from Bhutan, will take the stage with “Balancing Tradition and Modernity: Preserving Culture for Human Progress.” Drawing from his extensive experience with the Loden Foundation, Dr. Phuntsho will highlight Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness (GNH) model as a framework for integrating educational values that support both cultural preservation and progressive development. He will explore how this model serves as an educational tool for addressing the country’s current challenges, particularly in balancing tradition with modernization. His insights will extend to how this approach nurtures socially responsible entrepreneurs, fostering innovation while maintaining Bhutan’s rich heritage.
Indonesia’s Farwiza Farhan will present “From Passion to Action: Leading Conservation Efforts by Empowering Women, Youth, and Communities,” where she will share her fearless journey as a young conservationist, taking on the fight to save Sumatra’s Leuser Ecosystem. Starting out as a passionate leader, Farhan has broken through cultural and social barriers, navigating the complex perceptions of her being a Muslim woman in the realm of environmental advocacy. Unfazed by these challenges, she has empowered women and youth to step into leadership roles, challenging norms while rallying grassroots movements to preserve biodiversity. Awarded for Emergent Leadership, Farhan will share how her passion, resilience, and ability to combat stereotypes have fueled her mission to protect one of the world’s most critical ecosystems.
