3 dead, 64 hurt in new Bilibid riot

ANOTHER riot occurred yesterday morning inside the densely-populated New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa, one month after a bloody scuffle that left nine inmates dead in the same prison facility still reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of press time, three died while 64 others were injured during the scuffle that occurred at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra immediately ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to include in its investigation the latest NBP riot.

I have been informed that violence among inmates broke out again at the NBP maximum security compound this morning. Three persons were killed and 64 wounded. The DOJ has ordered the BUCOR to submit a detailed report ASAP. I will direct the NBI to conduct a parallel investigation or expand its ongoing probe into the previous violence,” Guevarra said.

Last month, nine inmates died and several others were injured after a pre-dawn brawl ensued in NBP.

Seven members of the feared Sputnik Gang were killed while two inmates from the rival Commando Gang perished.

The riot occurred at the East Quadrant of the NBP, which is still reeling from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aside from the NBP in Muntinlupa, the other BuCor prison facilities are the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City, the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Oriental Mindoro, Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, and the Leyte Regional Prison in Southern Leyte.
