3rd Southeast Asian Conference On Econutrition

UPLB Institute of Human Nutrition and Food (IHNF) of the College of Human Ecology will hold a Virtual Conference of its3rd Southeast Asian Conference on Econutrition, with the Theme “Econutrition in the Disruptive Innovation Era.”

The IHNF,in partnership with the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), will conduct a virtual conference of its 3rd Southeast Asian Conference on Econutrition, with the theme “Econutrition in the Disruptive Innovation Era,” on May 20 to 21, 2021 via Zoom. The conference is co-sponsored by various IHNF Alumni and other organizations.

Organized by IHNF– Philippine’s number 1 Nutrition institute, the 2021 Virtual Conference will highlight emerging technology innovations, experiences on econutrition, and effective use of econutrition. The 3rd Southeast Asian Conference on Econutrition will provide a venue for sharing state-of-the-art information on disruptive innovations in food and nutrition. The adoption of econutrition and application of disruptive innovations are envisioned to further contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Zero Hunger Challenge, and the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition 2016-2025.

The Technical Sessions in the two-day conference are expected to emphasize the Theory of Disruptive Innovation,which is described as the process by which simple, affordable innovations replace expensive, complex systems and products. It is hoped to discuss further disruptive innovations that simplify complex and expensive systems through enabling policies, infrastructure, technology, public-private partnerships, collaboration with the academe, and research utilization.

Participants can join Open Forums to discuss nutrigenomics, food innovations, food sensing technologies, microbiome research, mobile service delivery, and data analytics which are some potential breakthroughs that drive rapid progress towards sustainability, inclusivity, and efficiency of food systems, as well as improved health and nutrition.

IHNF Director Dr. Aimee Sherree Barrion, who recognizes the significance of integrated and interdisciplinary approaches to promoting optimal nutrition and transforming food systems, said, “econutrition has been used as one of IHNF’s guiding frameworks in its trilogy of function – Teaching, Research, and Extension. Econutrition encompasses interrelationships among nutrition and human health, agriculture and food production, environmental health, and economic development.”

IHNF is one of the four academic units of the College of Human Ecology. Its mission is to promote nutrition by advancing knowledge, innovative research, and dynamic public service. The graduates of its BS Nutrition program have been giving UPLB a 100% passing rate every year in the registered nutritionist and dietitian exam since 2008.The institute also offers graduate programs: MS Applied Nutrition, Master of Professional Studies in Food and Nutrition Planning, and Ph.D. Human Nutrition.
