9 inmates killed in bilibid riot

NINE inmates reportedly died and several others were injured after a pre-dawn melee over a still unknown cause ensued yesterday inside the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City.

Quoting Bureau of Corrections spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag, the Southern Police District said the riot sparkes at 2:30 a.m. and was controlled by prison officers at 4 a.m.

Seven members of the Sputnik Gang and two from the rival Commando Gang were killed.

The number of injured remains undetermined.

Chaclag confirmed that there were injured inmates during the riot of still unknown cause, but could not give the exact figure as the incident report has yet to reach his office.

The riot happened at the East Quadrant of the NBP, which is still reeling from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aside from NBP in Muntinlupa, the other BuCor prison facilities are Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong City, the Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Oriental Mindoro, Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Davao del Norte, Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Palawan, San Ramon Prison and Penal Farm in Zamboanga City, and the Leyte Regional Prison in Southern Leyte.
