Abanse Negrense rules PSL Challenge Cup

A MOTIVATED Alexa Polidario completed her reunion with Erjane Magdato with a championship as Abanse Negrense A took a 21-15, 21-17 win over Sta. Lucia A’s DM Demontaño and Jackie Estoquia in the Gatorade-PSL Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup Finals yesterday at the Subic Tennis Court.

Polidario and Magdato finished the season unbeaten in six matches without dropping a set, while Demontaño and Estoquia ended up bridesmaids for the third consecutive year.

Polidario and Magdato beat Sta. Lucia B’s Bang Pineda and Jonah Sabete, 21-18, 21-12, in the semifinals.

Demontaño and Estoquia, for their part, exacted their sweet revenge on Abanse Negrense B’s Jennifer Cosas and Gelimae Villanueva, 21-18, 16-21, 15-9, to achieve their third consecutive gold medal match appearance.

As the bubble bursted to end the three-day event, both pairs are already winners as they were part of the country’s first volleyball tournament played amid coronavirus pandemic.

Making it to the championship is just a bonus,” said Magdato, a seasoned beach volleyball campaigner from University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.

Estoquia everything to win in the semifinals, scoring three straight points to avert what could have been an all-Negrense final.

“I told DM in the third set that we need to calm down and use our emotions to bring out the best in us and win the game,” said Estoquia.

After being down by a set point, Abanse Negrense B’s Cosas and Villanueva rallied to snatch the bronze medal with a 21-13, 22-20 conquest of Sta. Lucia B’s Pineda and Sabete.

Sobrang happy and proud din po kasi first time po kami magpartner ni Gelimae,” said Cosas after their partnership has resulted to a podium finish.

F2 Logistics’ Jenny Senares and Kyla Gallego, who gave Estoquia and Demontaño a scare in the quarterfinals, topped Ella Viray and Theresa Ramas of United Auctioneers, Inc., 21-14, 21-11, to end up in fifth spot.

Toby’s Sports’ Jonah San Pedro and Javen Sabas scored a 21-14, 21-14 victory over Kennedy Solar Energy-PetroGazz’s Ariane Alarcon and Christina Canares to finish in seventh place.
