Widened Angat Bridge along Arterial Bypass Road in Bulacan Now Open

Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark A. Villar announced the opening of an expanded 2.22-kilometer section of Arterial Plaridel Bypass Road including one (1) of Luzon’s longest bridge across Angat River in Bustos, Bulacan.

Secretary Villar said that the additional two (2) new lanes will enhance transport capacity of the bypass road experiencing traffic growth with increasing number of motorists going eastern part of Bulacan and Nueva Ecija.

The widened section is part of the Arterial Road Bypass Project-Phase 3 funded by a loan agreement between the Government of the Philippines and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

DPWH Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain representing Secretary Villar and officials of the Embassy of Japan in the Philippines led by Economic Affairs Minister Masahiro Nakata representing Ambassador Kazuhiko Koshikawa, JICA Philippines Chief Representative Eigo Azukizawa, and JICA Senior Representative Kenji Kuronuma made a final inspection on Friday, July 9, 2021 of the expanded section before opening the completed additional two (2) lanes to vehicular traffic.

Undersecretary Sadain, in-charge of DPWH Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations implementing various Official Development Assistance (ODA)-funded Flagship Infrastructure Projects nationwide, said that the widened section consists of 1.12 kilometer Angat Bridge, 40.86 meter Tambubong Bridge and 1.06 kilometer road section are all under the Contract Package 3 of Arterial Road Bypass Project Phase 3 which involves the widening of the entire 24.61 kilometer stretch of the Plaridel Bypass Road from the Balagtas area of the North Luzon Expressway all the way to San Rafael in Bulacan.

As more motorists opted to use the Plaridel Bypass Road, a two (2)-lane bridge was constructed adjacent to the bridge completed in May 2018 to increase carrying capacity and improve traffic flow per direction, added Undersecretary Sadain.

Capacity improvement works are also on-going in other contract packages implemented by DPWH UPMO Roads Management Cluster 1 (Bilateral) headed by Project Director Benjamin Bautista and Project Manager Basilio Elumba.

The Arterial Bypass Road Project Phase 3 as the final stage has enough road right of way space for additional two (2) lanes was considered during the original planning and design phases.

The opening in 2018 of the entire Plaridel Bypass Road draw vehicles away from nearby congested Daang Maharlika Highway and encourage new or re-development of surrounding lands to stimulate socio economic development.
