APAT NA TAONG BAKWIT: Webinar to tackle plight of IDPs four years after ‘Marawi Siege’ set tomorrow

Dubbed ‘APAT NA TAONG BAKWIT’, Maranao leaders, members of various civil society organizations and IDP groups from Mindanao belonging to the network called Marawi Advocacy Accompaniment (MAA) will hold a webinar tomorrow, May 22, 2021 (Saturday, 9:30am-12:00nn) via ZOOM web-conferencing to discuss the issues and challenges in Marawi four years after Marawi Siege.

In particular, the webinar aims to discuss the status of Marawi’s rehabilitation and reconstruction, which according to MAA, ‘is now proceeding at a very slow pace despite the availability of government allocation.’

Also, the group calls on the Philippine government to accelerate its efforts on rebuilding the City of Marawi and prioritize the immediate, safe and dignified return of the displaced communities and provide just compensation for Marawi Siege victims.

According to the group, thousands of Marawi IDPs remain in temporary shelter communities and others are living elsewhere in tightly packed communities and squalid conditions, which make them more vulnerable to the continuing onslaught of the COVID19 pandemic.

To mark the 4th anniversary of Marawi Siege, the group calls on the House of Representatives and Senate to convene public hearings for the immediate enactment of a ‘just’ Marawi Compensation Bill with an appeal to President Rodrigo Roa Duterte to support and certify the proposed measure as urgent.

Anak Mindanao Partylist Rep. Amihilda Sangcopan, who is one of the invited legislators for the event tomorrow, will present the proposed House Bill 7503 or the “Marawi Siege Compensation Act,” (a substitute bill on the Compensation measures).

Other invited guests are Rep. Khalid Dimaporo of Lanao Del Norte’s first district and Senator Miguel Zubiri.
