Art Behind Bars: Iligan City Jail Unveils Mural-Making Contest for CRS Month 2025

Iligan City, Philippines — To mark this year’s Community Relations Services (CRS) Month, the Iligan City Jail – Male Dormitory has officially launched its Mural-Making Contest, under the theme “Ugnayan at Bayanihan sa Piitan: Sandigan ng Serbisyong Tunay para sa Bagong Pilipinas.”

The event, running from June 23 to 27, 2025, serves not only as a platform for young artists but also as a symbol of unity between the facility and the broader community. It underscores the vital role of creative expression in fostering rehabilitation, public awareness, and collaborative transformation inside correctional institutions.

“This contest reflects our belief that art can be a bridge between people—between those inside and outside these walls,” said JCINSP CARMELO A CORSAME, City Jail Warden. “By opening our gates to students and their creativity, we hope to promote a deeper understanding of rehabilitation, compassion, and nation-building.”

The mural panels, located outside the facility, are being transformed by teams representing St. Peter’s College, Iligan Capitol College, and MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT). Each group is interpreting the CRS Month theme using a representational style with provided paints and their own tools and techniques.

A distinguished panel of local artists and BJMP officials will evaluate the murals based on Creativity (30%), Relevance (30%), Execution (20%), and Impact (20%). Winners—who will be awarded up to ₱10,000—will be recognized during a ceremony on June 30, 2025. All participants will also receive certificates of appreciation.
