Aug. 8 is ‘Alfredo S. Lim Day’ in Manila – Mayor Honey

Manila has set August 8 of every year as ‘Mayor Alfredo S. Lim’ day, to honor his legacy, contributions and invaluable service and dedication to the city and its residents, as well as commemorate his death anniversary.

Mayor Honey Lacuna commended the Manila City Council under Vice Mayor and Presiding Officer Yul Servo for the swift passage of the resolution whch declares August 8 as “Mayor Alfredo S. Lim Day” in the City of Manila.

Principally authored by Councilor Numero Lim (2nd district), the said resolution cited how Lim rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most respected public servants in the entire country, dedicating his life to the service of the Filipino people, particularly the residents of Manila. It was supported by all Councilors belonging to the majority, which include Mayor Lim’s grandson, Councilor Nino dela Cruz of first district, who thanked his colleagues for the resolution honoring his grandfather.

Mayor Lim was also cited as having served the city of Manila “with unwavering dedication and integrity, holding office from 1992 to 1998 and again from 2007 to 2013, during which he implemented numerous programs and projects that significantly improved the lives of Manileños.”

“His administration was characterized by a relentless campaign against crime and corruption, earning him the moniker “Dirty Harry” for his tough stance and effective measures in maintaining peace and order in the city,” Councilor Lim’s resolution stated.

The late mayor’s most notable achievements as cited in the resolution include the establishment of several public hospitals such as the Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Ospital ng Tondo, Justice Jose Abad Santos General Hospital, Ospital ng Sampaloc and the Sta. Ana Hospital which have provided essential healthcare services to countless residents and whose services were even enhanced under the tutelage of Mayor Lacuna, a doctor.

The councilor also cited Mayor Lim’s commitment to education which he said was evident through the construction of numerous school buildings, the improvement of educational facilities and the provision of scholarships, ensuring that quality education was accessible to all children in Manila.

Mayor Lim’s social welfare initiatives included the establishment of livelihood programs, senior citizen centers and housing projects, which greatly enhanced the quality of life for the marginalized and underprivileged sectors of society, he added.

Under his leadership, the City of Manila saw significant infrastructure development, including road improvements, beautification projects and the restoration of historical landmarks, which have not only modernized the city but also preserved its rich cultural heritage, the resolution stated.

“Mayor Lim’s visionary leadership and dedicated public service have left an indelible mark on the City of Manila, earning him numerous awards and recognitions, both locally and internationally,” it added.

The alderman said that when Lim passed away on August 8, 2020, he left behind a legacy of exemplary public service, dedication and love for the City of Manila and thus, “it is but fitting and proper to honor the memory of Mayor Alfredo S. Lim on the occasion of his fourth death anniversary, recognizing his exceptional service, dedication, and contributions to the City of Manila and its people.”

Lacuna said that Mayor Lim made a mark by establishing the Universidad de Manila which offers free tertiary education for poor but deserving students in Manila as well as the city’s 44 health centers and two evacuation centers in Baseco and Del Pan which are still very useful up to now.
