LET us all welcome the New Year in one piece.

This was the urgent call made by Mayor Honey Lacuna to all Manila residents, as she appealed for them to do away with firecrackers that pose harm to lives and limbs as part of the New Year revelry.

Instead, Lacuna advised the use of noisemakers that are not only safe but are even inexpensive, like pots and pans.

The lady mayor also reiterated that the city government of Manila is supporting and is thus strictly complying with the ban issued against firecrackers.

Lacuna also expressed confidence that the Manila Police District (MPD) headed by PBGen. Andre Dizon will implement the ban to the letter and go after the violators of the said ban.

A doctor, Lacuna cited the dangers of using, specially powerful firecrackers, apart from the fact that they cause air pollution.

She also notes that December of every year has been declared as “Firecrackers Injury Prevention Month” due to the concerted effort of various government offices and private institutions aimed at reducing firecracker-related injuries that usually accompany every New Year celebration.

Just the same, Lacuna said all city-operated hospitals will be put on alert beginning December 30 to accept patients with firecracker-related injuries.
