Sipa, a known traditional toy for children which are locally-made using plastic straws with lead metal washers, were found to contain 99.64% pure lead. The toy was screened using a SCIAPS X Series HH XRF Analyzer.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) issued DAO 2013-24, or the Chemical Control Order for Lead and Lead Compounds, that prohibits the use of lead in children’s toys. According to WHO, lead exposure can have serious consequences for the health of children.
Exposure to high levels of lead can cause central nervous system diseases, convulsions, and even death. Children who survive severe lead poisoning may be left with intellectual disability and behavioral disorders.
