MANILA Mayor Honey Lacuna ordered a liquor ban in the vicinity of Quiapo from January 8 to 10 as she urged devotees who will be joining the ‘Traslacion’ to wear face masks and avoid bringing children and the sick, to shield them from possible harm, saying they can watch the procession from a safe distance.

The liquor ban, along with a gun ban, was issued by the mayor upon the recommendation of Manila Police District chief Col. Arnold Thomas Ibay, adding that firecrackers are also prohibited in the area, this time upon the request of the Quiapo Church and fire authorities.

Lacuna also directed all local government departments, bureaus and offices concerned to make sure that they do their roles right in ensuring the safe, orderly and peaceful holding of the ‘Traslacion‘ on January 8, 2024.

Lacuna particularly directed the clearing of the procession route of all kinds of obstruction and hazards like tree branches and bundled wires as well as broken glasses, noting that the devotees who will be joining the procession are expected to go barefoot.

She also ordered a thorough check to make sure that the routes will be free of open manholes and other road problems which may cause the carriage carrying the Black Nazarene to tilt and cause accident or undue delay, as what had happened before.

The mayor is urging devotees to heed the advise of police and church authorities on the do’s and don’ts before, during and after the event in order to avoid any hassle.
