A South Korean national wanted by authorities in Seoul for kidnapping and beating a compatriot five years ago was arrested by the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
The fugitive, identified as Jang Seongwoong, 47, was arrested last May 22 in Pasay City by members of the BI’s fugitive search unit (FSU) under Rendel Ryan Sy.
According to Sy, Jang has been on the BI’s wanted list since 2021 when he was ordered deported by the bureau’s board of commissioners for being an undesirable alien.
Thus, Jang was arrested on the strength of a deportation warrant which was issued pursuant to the said deportation order.
Sy said that a check of the Korean’s travel record showed that the alien had been hiding here since he last arrived as a tourist on May 1, 2017, hence he is already overstaying.
Jang is also subject of a red notice from the Interpol that was issued in July 2019.
Prior to the Interpol notice, a warrant for his arrest was issued against Jang by the Daegu district court in Korea for serious physical injury and kidnapping.
Authorities alleged that Jang and his cohorts detained and severely beat their victim, who owe them gambling bets, using a baseball bat which caused the latter to suffer multiple bodily injuries.
The Korean is now detained at the BI detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City while awaiting deportation.
He was included in the BI’s blacklist which perpetually bans him from re-entering the country.
