ANOTHER woman suspected of being victimized by the mail-order-bride scheme was intercepted by Bureau of Immigration (BI) officers last January 14, 2025 at the NAIA.
Members of the BI’s Immigration protection and border enforcement section (I-PROBES) reported the interception of the 22-year-old female victim before she could board a Philippine Airlines flight to Shanghai, China.
Said victim was turned over to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for further investigation and the filing of appropriate charges.
BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval said the victim initially claimed to be visiting a Chinese husband. However, officers grew suspicious of her story, citing inconsistencies between her statements and the documents she presented.
She claimed to have recently married her alleged husband after a three-year relationship, but had conflicting answers on the details of said marriage.
Eventually, she admitted that they had met on an online app last November 21, met in person the following day, then got married two days after in exchange for a P50,000 monetary allowance for her family.
Sandoval said the victim recalled that her Chinese husband asked her if she received commissions for every referred Filipina, to which she said no.
