A Chinese man who was found to be overstaying was intercepted by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) while attempting to flee the country via the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1.
Nabbed by the BI’s immigration protection and border enforcement section (I-PROBES) was Zhang Chao, 31. He was then attempting to board a Malaysian Airways flight to Kuala Lumpur after overstaying for two months and trying to illegally pass through immigration.
The I-PROBES officers who conducted a redundancy check found Zhang to have overstayed since December 2024.
Zhang was processed by an immigration officer who is now suspected of facilitating his illegal departure. The alien’s passport was marked cleared by one officer despite him being unable to properly extend his visa.
BI spokesperson Dana Sandoval said the bureau initiated an investigation on the matter and will recommend to the Department of Justice to file the appropriate case against the said officer as it is implementing a ‘one-strike policy’ and will not hesitate to push for the charges against erring officers.
Meantime, Zhang was turned over to the BI’s legal division for booking and initiation of deportation proceedings and will remain in the BI’s facility inside Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig pending deportation.
