PORAC, Pampanga — The Bureau of Customs (BoC) destroyed some P160 million worth of assorted perishable and non-perishable products at the Greenleaf 88 Non-Hazardous Waste Disposal Facility here last Friday.

Loaded in nine 40-footer containers, the seized items included counterfeit cigarettes of different brands and imported vegetables from China.

The contrabands came from the BoC Port of Subic and transported to the Greenleaf 88 facility here for destruction.

Greenleaf 88 has three giant electric shredding machines that can accommodate huge volumes of materials.

Maita Acevedo, deputy collector for assessment at the Port of Subic, said the contrabands were up for disposal on the strength of a court order following forfeiture proceedings against the misdeclared cargoes.

We are here to supervise the condemnation process and to see to it that all materials brought into the Green leaf 88 waste disposal facility are grinded up to the last particles,” Acevedo said.

Also present during the condemnation were representatives from the Bureau of Plan Industry- Central Luzon, Japan Tobacco International and Philipp Morris.

Robert Gaza, owner of the Green Leaf 88, said all items brought for destruction are transformed into tiny pieces of materials. He added that the waste disposal facility is equipped with technical machines that process vegetables and other perishable items.
