BOC-NAIA intensifies info drive, anti-drug efforts

THE Bureau of Customs (BOC)-NAIA is bolstering its information drive for faster parcel clearance.

NAIA District Collector Carmelita ‘Mimel’ Talusan said this is in line with the BOC-NAIA’s commitment to provide transparent and efficient service to all stakeholders.

The BOC, through the Port of NAIA, has started distributing information materials to stakeholders, aimed at providing guidelines on processing and claiming of parcels.

BOC-NAIA started providing fliers outlining the steps needed to properly claim and release parcels from the BOC’s Central Mail Exchange Center (CMEC).

Among the information included in the materials are the proper way of filling up the postal declaration form, ways of tracking parcels and all the Customs processes and steps in case the parcel is subject to duties and taxes or need permits for regulated items.

These fliers include warnings on scams being perpetrated by unscrupulous individuals who lure their prospective victims into paying supposed customs charges to release the parcels or packages sent by a chatmate.

The fliers also contain Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) which provide information on common issues and concerns.

Talusan said the information drive conducted for the stakeholders is in line with the directive of Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero to improve all processes for faster clearance and enhance stakeholders’ engagement while promoting transparency and good communication.

In her statement, Talusan stressed that providing necessary information to stakeholders is important as such would ensure a quicker and more efficient process in the Bureau of Customs.

She also stated that more information on Customs’ processes promotes transparency on the part of the BOC and is in line with the bureau’s thrust to provide better government service.

The Port of NAIA, she stressed, remains one with the rest of the BOC in developing more initiatives to provide information to the public and promote ease of doing business as processes are geared more towards the promotion of zero contact and automation.

By the way, with Christmas just around the corner, the BOC-NAIA busted a marijuana shipment declared as toys and arrested its claimant, in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the NAIA Inter-Agency Task Force.

In a contolled delivery operation, the claimant of the 500 grams of high grade marijuana worth P808,000 in a warehouse in Pasay City, identified as a certain Kevin Dela Cruz, was collared by joint operatives.

The parcel misdeclared as “4m kids labs remote control detector robot kit” was shipped by a certain “Toynk Toys” from Markham, Canada. The said package was subjected to x-ray scanning, manned by the X-ray Inspection Project (XIP-NAIA), and yielded suspected images of dangerous drugs.

When the assigned NAIA-Customs examiner conducted 100 percent physical examination, the shipment was found to contain high-grade marijuana which was confirmed as such by tests conducted by the Customs Anti-Illegal Drug Task Force (CAIDTF) and PDEA.

The said apprehension and arrest are in furtherance of the strict instructions of Guerrero to intensify anti-illegal drugs efforts in coordination with PDEA, to totally eradicate the entry of illegal drugs and substances in the country.
