Bong Go abhors maltreatment of PH embassy household worker in Brazil

SENATOR and member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations Christopher “Bong” Go expressed abhorrence at the reported maltreatment of a household worker by the Philippine ambassador to Brazil, Marichu Mauro.

He confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered an investigation into the reported incidents of physical abuse toward the worker.

“The President has always been firm – the protection and promotion of the rights, welfare and well-being of Filipinos overseas is a paramount responsibility of our Government. Our ambassadors are duty-bound to carry out this mandate, no questions asked,” he continued.

Go spoke out in support of domestic helpers who are reportedly subjected to violence and punishment, making it clear that absolutely no one has the right to hurt another. He reassured that an impartial investigation will be carried out consistent with the relevant provisions of the law, including the Foreign Service Act of 1991.

The senator sternly reminded ambassadors, consuls and other officials to protect and serve their fellow Filipinos and set a good example being high ranking representatives of the country.

Go continued and offered assistance to the domestic helper in the video footage who returned to the Philippines from Brasilia, Brazil’s capital, last October 21.

Kung gusto n’ya po ng ibang trabaho o maghanap-buhay dito sa ating bansa ay handa po kaming tumulong sa kanya,” he pledged, before encouraging the public to report similar incidents of abuse to his office.

According to Go, he and the President had discussed and expressed the same view against violence and injustice. Once again, he stressed that no one has the right to physically or verbally assault another.

In an interview on October 28, Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. vowed the DFA’s response to the case would be “severe to the fullest extent of the law”. He reassured the DFA would dole out the appropriate sanctions and administrative or criminal charges against Mauro, should it be deemed necessary.
