THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) said the voter registration for the 2025 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) slated in July may be suspended.
Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said this is due to the possible extension of terms for barangay and SK officials and a proposal to move the said election on the first Monday of November 2026.
Garcia said it must be understood that all these are part of political decision which is not within the jurisdiction of the Comelec, especially its legislative department.
He ensure that the Comelec will respect and follow the decision in case the elections are moved.
“Ginagalang natin yan at kung ano mapagkasunduan nila, susunod ang Comelec lalo na ito ay pagpapaliban ng isang halalan,” he said.
The poll body, he added, will await the decision of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. on whether he will approve or veto the said proposal.
It was learned that the Comelec will be holding an emergency meeting next week to tackle the preparations for the BSKE, including the purchase of requirements and possible suspension of voter registration.
“Yan ay isa sa mga pinakamataas na consideration namin — na kung magkakaganun might as well gawin na lang namin ang voter registration pang-BSKE, simula na lang after ng Bangsamoro elections at pahabain namin kahit ilang buwan sa taon na to, halimbawa October hanggang August next year,” he said.
The BSKE is originally slated to be held on December 1, 2025.
