Cagayan de Oro City Jail-Male Dormitory Launches African Catfish Livelihood Project in Growth Phase

Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines – The Cagayan de Oro City Jail-Male Dormitory proudly announces the continued development of its African Catfish Livelihood Project, now entering its critical growth phase. Spearheaded through a collaborative effort between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology – Regional Office X (BJMPRO-X), this pioneering initiative highlights the potential of sustainable aquaculture as a tool for rehabilitation, innovation, and economic empowerment.

Utilizing advanced high-density production and fish processing technologies, the project equips Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) with valuable skills in aquaculture management. Beyond supporting food security within the facility, the endeavor paves the way for self-sufficiency and future livelihood opportunities post-release.

African Catfish Livelihood Project

A fascinating feature of the African catfish is its ability to breathe atmospheric air, enabling it to thrive even in low-oxygen environments—a resilience that mirrors the spirit of transformation within the correctional community.

This project is more than a livelihood effort; it is a testament to what inclusive innovation and purposeful rehabilitation can achieve.
