Candles cause fires in QC, Manila; PWD lola killed

UNATTENDED burning candles reportedly caused separate fires, killing a 63-year-old woman reportedly a PWD in Quezon City and leaving 40 families homeless in Manila.

Arson investigators said a senior citizen died in a house fire caused by a burning candle Wednesday morning in Quezon City.

Initial reports identified the fatality as Grace Aguas, 63, a resident of 4 Aqua Marine, Fern Village, Bgy. Pasong Tamo.

It was learned that the fire broke out at the victim’s house before 6 a.m.

A neighbor of the victim who saw the incident immediately reported the incident to barangay officials.

Fire Captain Aloysius Borromeo said there was no electricity in her home with merely a candle as source of light.

Probers suspect that the candle caused the flames.

The woman was reportedly alone during the blaze.

Meanwhile, around 40 families lost their homes at the Baseco Compound in Port Area, Manila, during a fire that was reportedly caused by an unattended burning candle.

The displaced families are now being taken care of by the Manila Social Welfare Department (MSWD) under Re Fugoso.

The Manila Bureau of Fire Protection said the blaze occurred at 11:03 p.m. and first struck a house located on 482 Block 9 Tambakan, Baseco Compound.

The fire quickly spread to adjacent houses made of light materials and was contained at 11:13 p.m.

Firefighters said they had a hard time responding to the fire due to the very narrow alleys in the area.

No one was reported injured in the said fire and estimated damage to property was placed at P150,000. With ITCHIE G. CABAYAN
