Carnap gang member dies in Malate encounter

AN alleged member of a notorious carnapping group was killed while his three companions were arrested during an encounter with members of the Manila Police District (MPD) in Malate, Manila, yesterday morning.

MPD Director PBGen. Leo Francisco identified the fatality as Ali Asgar Baraguer, 32, of Baseco Compound, Port Area, Manila.

Arrested were Tojamir Baraguer, 34, Grab driver; Aivan Gulam, 43, tricycle driver and Somaira Dimalao, 20, wife of Asgar. All are natives of Cotabato City.

An MPD report said that at around 3:30 a.m., forces from the Malate Police Station 9; Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT); District Mobile Force Batallion (DMFB) and District Investigation Division (DID) raided a hotel on Mother Ignacia Street in Malate.

The operation was based on information regarding the suspects’ illegal activities and followong a surveillance operation.

Instead of surrendering, the suspects reportedly resisted and a shooting encounter took place.

The three other suspects surrendered when Ali was killed.

The arrested suspects were brought to the police precinct for processing and the filing of charges against them.

Police recovered a Toyota Vios and a Ford Raptor, which are suspected to be carnapped and a gun said to be unlicensed.
