Central Luzon Farmers Hold Peace Rally, Commemorate Hacienda Luisita Incident

Hacienda Luisita Incident Peace Rally

Tarlac City, 17 November 2022 – Members of the Malayang Magbubukid ng Hacienda Luisita (MALAYA) and the Regional Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (RTF-ELCAC) Region 3 commemorated peacefully the 18th anniversary of the Hacienda Luisita Incident held at Barangay Ungot, Tarlac City, on November 16, 2022.

The incident was commemorated with a peace mass to pray for the victims’ families, as well as the ceremonial lighting of candles to further their call for peace, reconciliation, and unity. This is the fourth year that they have held a peaceful commemoration of the incident with theme promoting healing and peace.

It can be recalled that on November 16, 2004, the front organizations of the communist terrorist group led the farm workers to launch a violent mass protest at Hacienda Luisita, in the city of Tarlac, which claimed the lives of seven exploited farmers.

This incident was romanticized by the Communist Terrorist Group (CTG), and they branded it the “Hacienda Luisita Massacre” to use it as a main issue and propaganda against the government along with their implementation of their agrarian revolution to intensify their organizational activities in the peasant sector and recruit them in the armed struggle.

However, this litany was cut in 2019 when members of the Alyansa ng Magbubukid sa Asyenda Luisita (AMBALA) a known leftist peasant organization in the province of Tarlac withdrew their support for the CTG and formally severed their ties with its affiliated organizations, which resulted in the dismantling of the AMBALA.

They formed a new organization called Malayang Magbubukid ng Asyenda Luisita (MALAYA) with the help of the Northern Luzon Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, symbolizing their literal freedom from the CTG, which now registered as a cooperative.

The commemoration of the 18th anniversary of the Hacienda Luisita Incident coincided with the opening of the MALAYA cooperative store.
