CHINA yesterday thanked the Philippines for supporting its candidate in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
“Thank you for your support of the Chinese candidate. It is highly appreciated,” the Chinese Embassy in Manila tweeted in response to the tweet of Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. saying the Philippine voted for the candidates of China, Japan and Germany in the ICJ on Nov. 11.
In the same tweet, it said “As always, China would like to continue to strengthen close cooperation and coordination with the Philippines in regional and international fora.”
Locsin in his tweet said “We voted for CHINA’s, JAPAN’s and GERMANY’s respective candidates for the International Court of Justice and all 3 won—along with Uganda. Their qualifications are sterling, their probity beyond question; our national interest is in the intelligence & integrity of the world court.”
China, Croatia, Germany, Japan, Nigeria, Rwanda, Slovakia, Uganda competed for the five seats that will be vacated by the five judges: Julia Sebutinde (Uganda, representing the African states); Xue Hanqin (China, representing the Asia Pacific states); Yuji Iwasawa (Japan, also representing the Asia Pacific states); Peter Tomka (Slovakia, representing the Eastern European states); and Giorgio Gaja (Italy, representing the Western European and Other states) whose terms are to expire on February 5, 2021.
The ICJ handles legal disputes including maritime issues, and requests for advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by UN organs and specialized agencies.
