Cimatu Commits Fast Rehab of Siargao Island

Roy A. Cimatu

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) secretary and Task Force Build Back Better chair Roy A. Cimatu (left) receives an update on the status of rehabilitation in Siargao Island from Joseph Langanlangan (right), OIC-Division Chief for Technical Services of DENR Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office Surigao del Norte during the former’s visit to the island on January 15, 2022. Siargao Island is one of the areas badly-hit by typhoon Odette on December 16, 2021 (inset). Cimatu vowed to fast track the island’s rehabilitation and ordered the identification of relocation sites for displaced communities, the implementation of ‘cash for work’ program for locals who will be hired to plant mangroves in identified sites, and the installation of ‘no build zone’ signages to prevent the construction of structures in high risk areas.
