No matter how hard boxing fans try to stop the popularity of celebrity bouts, the events continue to perform extremely well commercially. There was another example of that over the past weekend, as Ben Askren was knocked out inside two minutes by YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul.
The fight was extremely popular in the United States, with celebrities such as Justin Bieber and Snoop Dogg in attendance for the event. The circus that follows the celebrity bouts doesn’t seem to be showing any sign of stopping, and that has continued to lead to speculation that one of the biggest stars in the world of UFC could return to the boxing ring to take on Jake Paul.
War Of Words Between Fighters
It’s fair to say that neither Paul nor McGregor are stars that keep their mouths shut when they have an opinion that they want to share with the world. Paul has constantly been calling out McGregor over the past couple of months, and even mocked the UFC legend when he was knocked out by Dustin Poirier in their rematch earlier in the year. Customers looking to bet on the upcoming trilogy fight between the paid will be able to claim a UFC betting bonus to maximise their returns.
McGregor’s immediate attention would be on that third, and final fight with his old rival, but he has refused to rule out a return to the boxing ring. The Irishman has fought professionally on one previous occasion, as he stepped in the ring with legendary fighter Floyd Mayweather.
He was knocked out in the tenth round of their contest, but he is still keen on returning to the ring, and a showdown with Manny Pacquiao was muted earlier in the year. However, those plans were knocked back after Poirier’s stunning win against McGregor in January.
Could The Fight Happen?
In truth, there is a chance that the fight could happen, but there is also a chance that Paul could instead target another fighter. There was a feeling from around the MMA world that Askren would have had enough experience to finally end Paul’s run in its tracks, but that ultimately wasn’t to be the case. British undefeated heavyweight Tommy Fury has already reignited his war of words with Paul, and could throw his hat into the ring.
Mayweather is another star that Paul has called out, but a showdown with his brother could bring an end to those plans, as Mayweather and Logan Paul still reportedly have an agreement to fight. Any plan for McGregor to step in the ring with Paul would have to wait until at least after the Irishman has been back in the octagon against Poirier later in the year.
Fans will be hoping that McGregor will take the fight, as the vast majority of boxing fans want to see Paul actually involved in a fight against an opponent with proven quality to see how good he really is.
