Digital advocacy network welcomes Globe blocking of messages with links

Digital Pinoys

A network of digital advocates welcomed Globe’s blocking of text messages containing links.

Digital Pinoys national campaigner Ronald Gustilo said that the move shows that telcos can address the problem of spam messages even though there is no legislation mandating them to do so.

“Globe telecom’s blocking of text messages containing links is a welcome development in our fight against spam and scam messages.”

Gustilo said that with the blocking of text messages with any kind of link, the risk of their subscribers being directed to suspicious sites is lessened. He urged Globe Telecoms to look into the possibility of making the blocking of messages with links permanent.

“Now that the messages with links will not be delivered, although only for a temporary period, the chances of the perpetrators to victimize is lessened. We urge Globe the look into the possible effects, if there is any, if they decide to block it permanently.”

Gustilo also urged Smart and DITO to facilitate blocking of text messages with links coming from their networks so that their subscribers will also be protected from malicious links.

“We need to have a concerted effort to cripple and eventually stop the operations of these scamming syndicates utilizing text messaging. That’s why we urge Smart and DITO to follow suit and block the transmission of messages containing links.”

Gustilo however reminded telcos that they should still exhaust all efforts to block mobile numbers transmitting spam messages and to stop all spam messages from being transmitted.

“Ultimately, the public should not receive any unwanted message from spammers and scammers. The previous statements from telcos are saying that they have the technology to block spam messages. We urge all of them to amplify their efforts in eradicating spam and scam messages.”
