A STRONG reminder was issued by Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna for city residents to avoid leaving unattended, lighted candles when going on vacation for the long weekend and to also make sure that they turn off their stoves and gas tanks to avoid causing fire.

The mayor also urged Manilans to use the occasion to meditate, renew their faith and reboot.

“Gamitin po natin ang panahon na ito upang makapagnilay-nilay, magbalik-loob sa Panginoon, patatagin ang ating paniniwala sa Kanya at maipahinga ang ating katawan at isipan,” she said.

For those who will be gathering in the Churches, Lacuna reminded them to make sure that they keep themselves hydrated and stay out of the sun specially during hours when the heat is most harmful to health.

In anticipation of many going out of town over the weekend, Lacuna stressed that leaving lighted candles is one of the leading causes of fire, along with gas tanks and stoves that are not taken care of properly and left on.

Noting the increasing heat, Lacuna said that such accidents are not remote, citing the many occasions that fire occurred in residential areas for the reasons she cited.

In a separate development, Lacuna announced that the two city-run public cemeteries, the Manila North Cemetery (MNC) and Manila South Cemetery (MSC), will be closed on Maundy Thursday and, Good Friday in observance of the Lenten season.

It was learned from MNC Director Yayay Castaneda that the MNC will resume operations on Saturday, April 19.
