DPWH Commits to Complete BGC Road Project, Works Straight Through Night

DPWH BGC Road Project

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is committed to fully complete the entire 1.481-kilometer alignment of Bonifacio Global City (BGC)-Ortigas Center Road Link Project, working double time to finish this September.

Secretary Mark A. Villar said that construction activity for the viaduct structure and approach 3 along BGC’s 8th Avenue is progressing even with delays caused by the complexities of Covid-19 crisis and recent bad weather condition that pose challenges in ground activities.

In his report to Secretary Villar, Undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations Emil K. Sadain said that deck slab with parapet and median barrier from Pier 19 to Pier 22 which is the viaduct portion from Lawton Avenue and Kalayaan Avenue intersection to BGC were completed and asphalting works and installation of electrical light post have started.

Our engineers and construction crews are working straight through night to beat the target full connection from Pasig/Mandaluyong to Kalayaan Bridge in Makati City and Lawton Avenue – Global City Viaduct towards BGC by end of this month, added Undersecretary Sadain.

Once the Lawton Avenue to the Global City Viaduct with the ramp at 8th Avenue is fully completed, it will provide direct connectivity between the business district of Ortigas and Bonifacio Global City.

Prior to work disruption brought by heavy downpour of Typhoon Jolina, initial concrete pouring was done for the approach slab on completed retaining wall for the ramp at 8th Avenue.

The level-by-level installation of about 4,874 pieces of modular blocks for the mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall together with backfilling activities in preparation for the portland concrete cement paving of Approach 3 are also on-going.

DPWH and its project contractor Persan Construction also worked with Meralco for the extended manholes of their underground utilities.

BGC-Ortigas Road Link Project, which aims to lessen travel time between BGC and Ortigas Central Business District into just 12 minutes, is implemented by UPMO Roads Management Cluster 1 headed by Project Director Benjamin Bautista under direct project supervision of Project Manager Ricarte Mañalac.

The project is composed of the already accessible Kalayaan Bridge formerly known as Sta Monica-Lawton Bridge, improvement at Brixton and Fairlane Streets, and the Lawton Avenue – Global City Viaduct.
