DPWH completes isolation, COVID facilities in metro

WITH the National Capital Region still recording the highest cases, the Department of Public Works and Highways fast-tracked the completion of facilities around Metro Manila to strengthen the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar, the country’s isolation czar, announced that the department has completed and turned-over a new 44-bed capacity COVID-19 isolation facility to the City Government of Makati.

Villar said that the makeshift hospital that comes with one nursing station and one X-ray room inside Makati Aqua Sports Arena was put up by DPWH Metro Manila 2nd District Engineering Office from 40-foot container vans.

The completed facility was turned over on Thursday, Oct. 29 to Makati City Mayor Abigail S. Binay and Makati City Congressman Luis N. Campos. The turn-over ceremony was also graced by Chief Implementer of the Philippines’ Declared National Policy Against COVID-19 Secretary Carlito G. Galvez, Jr.

Just like the rest of the DPWH-implemented COVID-19 Quarantine Facilities, the one in Makati is fully-airconditioned, and is equipped with hospital beds, tables and chairs, and a private comfort room for each of the patient room.

Guided by the design prepared by DPWH Task Force to Facilitate Augmentation of Local and National Health Facilities, the Metro Manila 2nd District Engineering Office converted the Makati Aqua Sports Arena makeshift hospital in only 30 days.

Meanwhile, a 136-bed capacity quarantine/isolation healthcare facility was completed in Barangay Nangka, Marikina City.

In just one and a half months, DPWH Metro Manila 1st District Engineering Office has converted 37 units of 40-foot container vans and one (1) unit of 20-footer container van into 136 air-conditioned rooms that will be used as temporary medical facility for suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases with mild symptoms.

The facility includes eight rooms for health workers, two rooms for X-ray and Laboratory, two rooms for Doctors and Nurse Station, and one electrical room.

Meanwhile, a 62-bed capacity isolation facility made from 34 units of container vans was also completed by the DPWH MMFDEO inside Pateros Elementary School Gymnasium. The facility also comes with an office, health workers’ dorm room, control center room, and a laboratory.

On the other hand, the DPWH has turned over to the city government of Paranaque a newly-completed medical healthcare facilities for COVID-19 patients and healthcare professionals.

Villar said the completed quarantine facility is composed of 84 air-conditioned rooms equipped with hospital bed, table, chair, and private comfort room to function as comfortable place where COVID-19 patients can recover.

He added Four nursing stations were also included in the project construction to provide a convenient area for health professionals to take a break and recharge.

The completed facility was also turned over last Thursday by to Paranaque City Mayor Edwin L. Olivarez, Paranaque City Representative Eric L. Olivarez and Department of Health representatives.

The turn-over ceremony was also Galvez, DPWH NCR Director Ador G. Canlas and Metro Manila 2nd District Engineer Arleen D. Beltran.

The project is located at Airforce One Parking Area, Barangay San Dionisio, Parañaque City which was identified by DPWH NCR and Metro Manila 2nd District Engineering Office as one of the feasible sites within the City.

As part of the DPWH’s initiative in assisting the on-going battle against COVID-19 pandemic, we are making sure to efficiently provide patients and our medical professionals such facilities with this project completed earlier than the target date,” Villar said.

We are continuously converting containers into mobile health facilities to assist the DOH in fighting COVID-19,” he added.
